THE TOWN OF LODEVE
Lodeve is a typical medieval market town in the South of France. It has quaint small streets with cafes, restaurants, artisan workshops and an imposing 12th Century Cathedral. The town is steeped in history not only through the wonderful the Cathedral of Saint Fulcran and its stained glass windows, but with the Musee Fleury and its annual art exhibition held each summer. Lodeve is set amongst the vineyards of the Languedoc and has a wonderful climate for wine growing. When driving around the region you will see many signs advertising “Degustation” which is an invitation from a wine grower for you to taste and hopefully buy some of his wine.
The Saturday Market is the highlight of the local week and you can buy lots of local and regional produce as well as the more unusual. Cheeses, wine, artisan bread, olives are all for sale along with honey, flowers, local crafts and of course coffee at the numerous street-side cafes.
The sea is not far away and the Mediterranean coast is merely 45 minutes away with its 180 km of sandy beaches, small ports and fish restaurants.
The cosmopolitan city of Montpellier is only some 30 minutes drive away and is an internationally renowned centre for shopping and the arts.
CAFES & RESTAURANTS IN LODEVE
Lodeve is blessed with excellent cafes and restaurants. Just perfect for sitting and watching the world go by, whilst enjoying a delicious coffee or mouth watering dish.
Starting with cafes, there are three within the town centre that are perfect for taking a rest on market days or just grabbing a quick cool drink on a warm, South of France day.
The first is the Cafe des Colonnes that is situated in the Boulevard De La Liberte. They serve a collection of coffee, beers and wines. The local newsagent and tobacconist is just next door for newspapers, cigarettes, cigars, candy and gifts.
The second is just around the corner on the Rue Neuve Des Marches and is called the Salon Du The. They have a good amount of tables outside and is perfect for sampling their pastries and artisan ice cream. The Salon Du The is situated in the middle of the Saturday market and is perfect for taking a break as you scour the artisan stalls on a Saturday morning.
Finally, the Bar Des Halles, just beside the Halle Darde art gallery. This cafe has by far the largest amount of outside tables but there is little shelter from the sunshine. Please be aware of this when taking young children. They will need hats and lashings of suntan cream. However, you will not find a friendlier welcome and the owner, Fatima, really is a local legend.
Moving onto restaurants, we need to start with the 2 main hotels within Lodeve. The Hotel De La Paix is perfect for the gastronaut and offers an interesting twist on local produce in a quiet, refined environment. Parking is at a premium but there is a free carpark within was walking distance from the hotel.
The Croix Blanche is a beautiful looking hotel on the other side of Lodeve, providing a more traditional menu and atmosphere. Albeit clean, tidy and well appointed, you can feel the atmosphere in the main dining room which adds that little extra interest whilst enjoying the delicious food.
If you are looking for traditional French restaurants you can do no better that with the Petite Sommelier and Entre Tere Et Mer. Both offer excellent menus and service, with the Petite Sommelier being in the heart of Lodeve on the Boulevard De Liberte and Entre Terre Et Mer on the Avenue Paul Teisserenc.
Lodeve also enjoys many restaurants including Middle Eastern and Far East Asian Cuisine. For more information please click the link to Trip Advisor for more ideas and reviews – Trip Advisor, Lodeve.
Bon Appetit.
